The Perfect 15-Day Itinerary Through Southern Peru: From Lima to Cusco

If you're planning your first adventure in the land of the Incas, the famous southern circuit of Peru is the ultimate route. This tour takes you from the vibrant Pacific coast to the heights of the Andes, combining gastronomy, deserts, deep canyons, navigable lakes, and one of the wonders of the world.

Here is the ideal 15-day itinerary to make the most of your time, moving safely and intelligently.

Days 1 and 2: Arrival in Lima, the Gastronomic Capital

Your trip begins in Lima. Dedicate your first day to resting after your flight and exploring the Miraflores boardwalk or the bohemian district of Barranco.

Local tip: Don't leave without trying authentic Peruvian ceviche at a good local ceviche restaurant (always ask your guide which ones are the best!).

Essential: Take a tour of the Historic Center of Lima (Plaza de Armas, Catacombs of San Francisco).

Days 3 and 4: The Paracas Breeze and the Huacachina Oasis

Traveling south on the Pan-American Highway, you will reach the Ica region, where the desert meets the ocean.

Paracas and Ballestas Islands National Reserve

Often called "The Galapagos of Peru", the Ballestas Islands are home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins and thousands of birds.

The Huacachina Desert

Just a couple of hours away lies the stunning Huacachina Oasis. Spend the afternoon riding in dune buggies and sandboarding on the dunes as the sun sets.

Day 5: The Mystery of the Nazca Lines

The famous Nazca Lines are giant geoglyphs etched into the desert over 2,000 years ago. The only way to truly appreciate figures like the monkey, the spider, or the hummingbird is by taking a scenic flight in a small plane.

Days 6 and 7: Arequipa and the Majestic Colca Canyon

It's time to start gaining altitude. Arequipa, the "White City", is built with volcanic stone and guarded by three volcanoes.

  • The Colca Canyon: One of the deepest in the world. Here you can observe the majestic flight of the Andean condor in its natural habitat, an experience that will give you goosebumps.

Days 8 and 9: Puno and the Magic of Lake Titicaca

Following the ascending route, we arrive in Puno (3,827 meters above sea level), home to the highest navigable lake in the world. Sail across the cool waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the stunning Floating Islands of the Uros, constructed entirely of totora reeds, and interact with the local communities.

Days 10 to 15: Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

The jewel in the crown. Cusco, the "Navel of the World", requires several days to be properly explored.

  • Day 10 (Cusco City): Explore the Plaza de Armas, the Qorikancha temple, and the nearby ruins.
  • Days 11 and 12 (The Sacred Valley): Visit Pisac, Ollantaytambo and the incredible salt mines of Maras.
  • Day 13 (Machu Picchu): Take the train to Aguas Calientes and climb up to the Inca citadel early in the morning. The view at sunrise is a memory for a lifetime!
  • Days 14 and 15 (Nature and Farewell): Take a trek to Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon, then catch your flight back to Lima.
