Huacachina and the Ballestas Islands: Can they be visited in a single day from Lima?
Many travelers arrive in Peru with limited time, focusing most of their vacation on Cusco and Machu Picchu. However, upon closer inspection, they discover two gems on the southern coast that they don't want to miss: the incredible marine life of the Ballestas Islands in Paracas and the surreal oasis in the desert of Huacachina in Ica.
Then the big question arises: «"If I'm in Lima, can I visit both places and return to my hotel on the same day?"»
The short answer is: Yes, absolutely. But it requires getting up very early and having impeccable logistics. Here I explain the exact itinerary, what you'll see, and the best way to organize this intense but unforgettable trip.

The Real Itinerary of a "Full Day" Paracas – Ica
To visit both destinations in a single day from Lima, the timings must be calculated almost perfectly. Here's what a typical day on this route looks like:
1. The early morning departure (4:30 am – 5:00 am)
To arrive at the pier on time, you must leave Lima before sunrise. The trip along the Pan-American Highway South to the Paracas resort takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. Use this time to sleep in the vehicle.
2. Morning at sea: Ballestas Islands (8:00 am – 10:00 am)
Upon arrival in Paracas, you'll board a motorized speedboat. On this two-hour tour, you'll first see the enigmatic "Candelabro" (a giant geoglyph on the sand hillside) and then venture out to sea to circle the Ballestas Islands.
- What will you see? Thousands of guano birds (such as boobies and Inca terns), cute Humboldt penguins and hundreds of sea lions resting on the rock formations.

3. Transfer and Lunch (11:00 am – 2:00 pm)
After returning to the mainland, the journey continues to the city of Ica (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes by car). Before heading to the desert, this is the perfect time to visit a traditional winery. You can enjoy a lunch of typical dishes and a quick tasting of Pisco, Peru's national drink.
4. Adrenaline Afternoon: The Huacachina Oasis (3:30 pm – 5:30 pm)
You'll arrive in Huacachina just as the extreme desert heat begins to subside. You'll climb aboard the famous dune buggies that race across the dunes at top speed, like a sand roller coaster. Afterward, you'll be given boards to practice on. sandboard (sliding on the sand).
- The grand finale: Watching the sunset from the top of the dunes, with the oasis shimmering below, is the perfect ending to the day.

5. Return to Lima (6:00 pm – 10:30 pm)
With your clothes covered in sand and a smile on your face, you'll begin your journey back to the capital. You'll arrive at your hotel in Miraflores, Barranco, or San Isidro around 10:30 p.m., ready for a well-deserved rest.
Public Bus vs. Private Transport for a Full Day
If you have several days, taking this route by interprovincial bus is an excellent idea. But for a trip of just one day, Relying on public buses is a big risk:
- By Bus: You'll have to spend money on taxis to the station in Lima, wait at the terminals, take the bus to Paracas, then figure out how to get from Paracas to the bus terminal for Ica, and finally negotiate another taxi to Huacachina. If a bus is delayed, you'll miss the island tour or the sunset on the dunes.
- By Private Transport: They pick you up at your hotel in Lima, store your backpack safely all day, and take you directly to each attraction. Zero stress about missing connections and much more time to relax.
