Exploring Lake Titicaca: Which Islands to Visit from Puno?
Arriving in the city of Puno, at 3,827 meters above sea level, has an unparalleled reward: finding yourself face to face with the immensity of the Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world.
Sailing through these deep blue waters is a mystical experience, but when booking an excursion, many travelers get confused by the options. Basically, there are three main islands you can visit from the port of Puno: Uros, Taquile and Amantaní. Each one offers a completely different experience. Here I explain how they differ so you can choose the one that best suits your travel style.

1. The Floating Islands of the Uros: A miracle of ancient engineering
They are, without a doubt, the most famous image of Lake Titicaca. They are not islands of earth and rock, but floating platforms built entirely by hand by interlacing reeds. reeds (an aquatic plant that grows in the lake).
- The experience: You'll learn how families build and maintain their own islands and homes. You'll be able to take a ride on their traditional reed rafts (the "Mercedes Benz" of the lake, as the locals often joke).
- Time required: Half a day (usually in the morning). They are only 30 minutes by boat from Puno.
- Ideal for: Travelers with limited time or families with children looking for a short and fascinating outing.
2. Taquile Island: The Master Weavers of Lake Titicaca
If you have the whole day, the classic tour combines Uros in the morning and continues sailing for about two more hours to the rocky island of Taquile.
- The experience: Taquile is world-famous (and recognized by UNESCO) for its incredible textile art. Interestingly, here It is men who weave The finest chullos (hats) and sashes, with their designs that tell stories about their marital status and community. You'll also enjoy lunch of freshly caught trout from the lake, with spectacular views.
- Time required: «"Full Day" (Full Day). You leave at 7:00 am and return to Puno at 5:00 pm.
- Ideal for: Lovers of culture, crafts and those who enjoy short walks (you have to climb a good stretch of stone stairs to get to the main square of the town).
3. Amantaní Island: Experiential tourism and starry skies
Amantaní is even further away than Taquile. This island isn't for a quick visit, but for disconnecting from the modern world (literally, electricity is very limited).
- The experience: It's done here experiential tourism. The boats drop you off on the island and you are welcomed by a local family ("Mamas" and "Papas"). You will sleep in their home, eat the food they grow (lots of potatoes, quinoa, and local vegetables), and in the evening they will dress you in traditional costumes for a community celebration.
- Time required: 2 Days and 1 Night.
- Ideal for: Adventurous travelers, backpackers, and those seeking a deep and authentic cultural immersion, far from conventional hotels.
How to decide?
- If you only have 1 free morningGo to the Aurochs.
- If you have 1 full day: Take the Uros + Taquile combined tour.
- If you have 2 days And if you're looking for something truly authentic: Spend the night in Amantaní (and on the way back, the boats usually stop in Taquile).
Arrive in Puno rested and stress-free
The logistics of getting to Puno can be tiring, especially if you're coming by road from the Colca Canyon (Arequipa) or from Cusco along the famous Ruta del Sol route. Arriving exhausted and having to deal with taxis to get to the port early in the morning takes away from the magic of Lake Titicaca.
