What is the Best Time to Travel to Southern Peru: Climate Month by Month
One of the first things you discover when planning your trip to Peru is that our country doesn't have just one climate. Due to the imposing Andes Mountains, the climate on the coast (Lima, Ica) is diametrically opposed to the climate in the highlands (Arequipa, Puno, Cusco).
While you might be melting in the heat under a blazing sun in the Huacachina desert, a torrential downpour could be falling in Cusco that same day. So, when is the best time to pack your bags and embark on the famous "Southern Route"?
To make your life easier, here I explain how the climate in Peru is divided and what to expect month by month so you can choose your ideal date.

The Golden Rule: The Two Seasons of the Andes
Since the main goal of travelers on the 90% route is to reach Machu Picchu (Cusco) and Lake Titicaca (Puno), your trip planning must be guided by the climate of the Andes Mountains. The Peruvian highlands have two very distinct seasons:
1. The Dry Season (May to October)
It is considered the best time to travel to Cusco and Puno.
- The Climate: The days are incredibly sunny, with clear blue skies that are perfect for photographing Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain. There is almost no rain.
- The Contrast: With no clouds, the nights and early mornings are very cold, especially in June and July (in Puno the temperature can drop to 0°C).
- On the Coast (Lima/Ica): During these months, Lima enters its winter and is usually covered by a gray fog (the famous "donkey's belly"). Ica and Paracas, however, maintain a pleasant climate almost all year round.
- Things to keep in mind: Being the best time, it's also the peak season. There will be more tourists, and you need to book your Machu Picchu tickets and trains well in advance.
2. The Rainy Season (December to March)
- The Climate: Rainfall in the mountains is frequent, usually heavy downpours in the afternoons (it does not usually rain all day without stopping).
- The Good: The Andean landscapes turn a spectacular emerald green, there are fewer tourists, and prices tend to drop. Plus, the nights aren't as freezing as during the dry season.
- On the Coast (Lima/Ica): It's the height of summer! Lima is shining brightly, the beaches are beautiful, and taking the Ballestas Islands tour or the buggy rides in Huacachina is a pleasure under the warm sun.
- Things to keep in mind: In February it rains so much in the mountains that The Inca Trail is closed for the entire month for maintenance (although Machu Picchu is still open and you can get there by train).

The Transition Months: The Best Kept Secret
If you want the best of both worlds (good Andean weather, beautiful landscapes, sun on the coast and fewer crowds), the shoulder months are your best bet:
- April and May: The rains have just stopped. The entire Sacred Valley is green and blooming, and the skies are beginning to clear.
- October and November: The nighttime chill has passed, the weather is milder, and although some light drizzles may begin, the days are still fantastic for exploring.

Travel comfortably and safely, regardless of the weather.
Whether you choose to visit during the height of the coastal summer or the Andean rainy season, Peru's weather demands careful planning. Waiting for a public bus in the rain in Cusco or dragging suitcases under the scorching sun in Nazca is hardly the ideal way to spend your vacation.
