When planning a trip to southern Peru, one destination stands out shrouded in an aura of absolute mystery: the Nazca Lines. These gigantic geoglyphs, etched into the desert more than 2,000 years ago, have baffled archaeologists, historians, and curious visitors for decades.

But when it comes time to include this destination in the itinerary, most travelers ask themselves the same question: Is the overflight really worth paying for? Is it true that small planes make you very dizzy? Here I'll tell you the whole truth, the updated prices for 2026, and my best advice to help you make the right decision.

What are the Nazca Lines, really?

Before boarding a small plane, you should know what you're going to see. These aren't just simple drawings in the sand; they're channels between 40 and 210 centimeters wide that reveal a yellowish color beneath the dark layer of the desert. Some of the figures measure up to 300 meters long.

The only way to appreciate its true size and shape is from the air. From the ground, you'll only see lines that look like meaningless paths.

The famous flyover: Does it cause as much seasickness as they say?

Let's be honest: flying over the lines in a small plane is an intense experience.

In order for the passengers on both sides of the small plane (usually 4 to 6 passengers, plus the pilot and co-pilot) to see each figure clearly, the pilot must make tight turns (figure-eight tilts) over each geoglyph.

  • If you are prone to motion sickness: Yes, it is very likely that you will feel nauseous.
  • Is it worth it despite this? For the vast majority, Yeah. Seeing these figures in the middle of the vast desert is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The flight lasts about 30 to 35 minutes, a manageable time if you're prepared.

The Alternative: The Metal Lookout

If flying is definitely not your thing or you're traveling on a very tight budget, there's a metal tower next to the Pan-American Highway South.

  • From up there (it only costs a few soles), you can see two figures: The Tree and The Hands.
  • It doesn't compare to the experience of a full flight, but it's a good option if you're just passing through and want to at least cross the destination off your list.

4 Golden Tips for Your Overflight

  1. Fly early: The best flights are between 7:00 am and 10:00 am. There is less wind, which means less turbulence and better visibility.
  2. Don't eat a heavy breakfast: Eat something very light, like a biscuit and some mate or tea. Leave the heavy breakfast buffet for later. after of the flight.
  3. Bring your original passport: It's a mandatory airport security requirement. They don't accept copies.
  4. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing: The climate in Nazca is very hot and the cabins of small planes heat up quickly under the desert sun.
